Il verbo essere (The verb to be)


Buongiorno!

Today we are going to study the verb Essere (To Be) in Italian.

The present forms of the verb Essere are:
ITALIAN
ENGLISH
IO SONO
I AM
TU SEI
YOU ARE
LUI/ LEI È
HE/ SHE IS
NOI SIAMO
WE ARE
VOI SIETE
YOU ARE (PLURAL)
LORO SONO
THEY ARE

As same as in English, we can use the verb Essere to answer questions with Chi (Who)

CHI SEI?
(WHO ARE YOU?)
IO SONO UNO STUDENTE
(I AM A STUDENT)

The verb Essere is used to describe the subject as we do with the verb To Be

È BELLISIMA
(SHE IS VERY BEAUTIFUL)

AKIRO È GIAPPONESE
(AKIRO IS JAPANESE)

We can use the verb Essere to create sentences that answer questions starting with Dove (Where)
SONO IN UN BAR CON CARLA
(I AM IN A BAR WITH CARLA)
DOVE SONO?
(WHERE ARE THEY?)
