Ready to learn more prepositions in Italian?

Preposition " IN ":

1.- As a preposition of place: It remarks that you are within an inner place. For example, you can say:

rimango in casaI stay homw

In this example you remark that you stay in the interior and that you'll probably won't be out of your house.


lui è in macchinahe is in the car
lei è in cucinashe is in the kitchen

2.- Preposition of movement: used with the names of the countries, continents, islands:
vado in GermaniaI go to Germany
vado in AmericaI go to America

ATTENZIONE:
IN + IL + male noun starting in consonant change to = NEL
nel giardinoin the garden

IN + IL / LA + noun starting with a vowel change to = NELL'
nell'automobilein the car
nell'edificioin the building

NEL + IL + male noun starting with double consonant or o i change to = NELLO
nello spazioin the space

NEL in plural changes to NEI
nei giardiniin the gardens

NELL' and NELLO change in plural to NEGLI
negli edificiin the buildings
negli spaziin the spaces

NELLA y NELL' change in plural and become NELLE
nelle casein the houses
nelle automobiliin the cars

3.- For the seasons and other expressions:
in primaverain spring
in autunnoin autumn
in invernoin winter

But:
d'estatein summer

ATTENZIONE:
For the expressions of time using the months of the year you can use "A" or "IN"
interchangeably
in / a febbraioin february
in / a gennaioin january

Let's keep working on our Italian lessons. Ready to start working with some prepositions.

If you know how to use prepositions it will be way easier for you to make more complex phrases in Italian.

Let's start with the Prepositionn "A":

1.- As a preposition of movement: to go somewhere:

Italian
English
vado a casaI go home

With the names of the cities:
vado a Roma, MilanoI go to Rome, Milan

2.- Of time:
mangio sempre a quest'oraI always at this hour
alle nove, alle dieciat nine, at ten

3.- of state: with some frequent names as: casa (home), scuola (school), università (university), ospedale (hospital), porto (port), lezione (lesson), bar (bar) mare (sea), stazione (station), stadio (stadium).

sono a casaI am home
rimango a casaI stay home

4.- To compliment a structure:
regalare a qualcunoGive a present to someone
dare a qualcunoGive to someone

5.- To indicate an object that works a certain way:

una stufa a gasA gas tove
una barca a velaA sailing boat

6.- To indicate a flavour or a condiment:

gelato al limoneA lemon ice cream
pasta al ragúpasta with ragú

ATTENZIONE:
andare a piediGo walking
andare a cavalloGo on a horse
parlare a voce alta, bassaTalk in high/low voice
