Making questions in Italian

Ciao!

Come stai?
Today we are going to learn a little bit more about the Italian Grammar.  We have already made some sentences both in affirmative and negative way.

Now I am going to show you how to make questions in Italian.

Well how?

The answer is really easy: just in the same order you write the sentence as a statement.  You don't have to add an extra word (like do/does in english) or change the order of verb+ subject.

Lavori in un ufficio
(You work in an office)

Lavori in un ufficio?
(Do you work in an office)

Simple as that.
Then what's the difference?

Simply.  You identify if it's a question or an affirmative sentence just by looking at the intonation of the sentence.

Same applies with negative sentences

Voi non leggete
(You don't read)

Voi non leggete?
(Don't you read)

Io Mi Chiamo

Ciao

Today I'm going to show you how to use the verb Chiamare (Name)  and how to use it in your conversations.  Later, I hope we'll practice this verb even more

Chiamare
Io mi chiamo
Tu ti chiami
Lei si chiama

Sono Alvaro, e tu come ti ciahimi?
(I am Alvaro and you, what's your name?)

Io mi chiamo Alvaro
(My name is Alvaro)

-Scusi, Lei come si chiama
(Excuse me, what's her name?)

- Cecilia Monti

La negazione

Ciao!

Oggi, noi studieremo come creare frasi negativamente

Today we are going to study how to make negative sentences in Italian.

To do this, you just need to use the Italiano Word Non

Put Non between the subject and the verb and that's how you create a negative sentence in Italian.

Let's see this:

LEI DORME
(SHE SLEEPS)

LEI NON DORME
(SHE DOESN'T SLEEP)

IO VADO AL CINEMA
(I GO TO THE CINEMA)
IO NON VADO AL CINEMA
(I DON'T GO TO THE CINEMA)

BALLATE?
(DO YOU DANCE)

NON BALLATE?
(DON'T YOU DANCE)

As you can see, in Italian is not necessary to introduce the subject.  You just know that we are talking about "you" (voi) just after looking at

Come stai/ Come sta?

Buon giourno!

Today we are going to get some extra vocabulary to start a simple conversation in Italian

Come Stai (Tu)?
Come Sta (Loro)?

Both means How are you? Come stai is more informal however.

To answer this question.  For example I'm fine, we use the verb Stare as you can see  in the questions.  A verb from the first group:

ITALIANO
ENGLISH
IO STO
I AM
TU STAI
YOU ARE
LUI, LEI STA
HE/SHE/YOU (FORMAL) IS
NOI STIAMO
WE ARE
VOI STATE
YOU ARE
LORO STANNO
THEY ARE

-Buon giorno Carla.  Come stai?

  • Sto bene (I'm fine)
  • Benissimo, grazie (Very good, thank you)

  • Molto bene (very good)
  • Non c’è male (Not so bad)
  • Mi sento male (I'm feeling bad)
  • Molto male (Vey bad)
- E tu, E Lei? (And You)
- Bene grazie

So now it's your turn.  I hope you enjoy your new Italian class.

I saluti en Italiano

Buongiorno!

Today we are going to study how to say hi in Italian.

Ciao
That's the easiest way to say hi in Italian.  You can say Ciao at no matter what hour of the day and it's used both to say hi or goodbye.

- Oh ciao Paola!

However Ciao is an informal way to say hi in Italian.  You can only use it with your friends or with young people.

For the rest use this table to guide you

I pronomi personali soggetto

Let's start studying Italian.  In this very first lesson I wanted to start teaching you the subjects in Italian:

io
I
tu
You
lui
  lei
He
She

noi
We
voi
You (pl)
loro
They (pl)

Try to have fun pronouncing the subjects in Italian.  At this point don't think about the verbs, thought you can start looking for some of them in your dictionary.

In Italian, it's not necessary to write the subject in a sentence.  If you know how to skeap Spanish or Portuguese for example, this will be so much easier for you to understand because we do the same in our languages.

If not, you just need to see the verb to recognize who is the subject:

IO SONO ITALIANO
 (I AM ITALIAN)
=
SONO ITALIANO

If you have any doubts or comments/ suggestions, don't hesitate to write me.  Have a nice day and enjoy your Italian!
