Today we are going to study how identify male and female nouns in Italian

Male nouns in Italian commonly end by o or e


IL BAMBINO
(THE BOY)

IL GATTO
(THE CAT)

On the other hand, female nouns commonly end by a or e

LA GATTA
(THE CAT- FEMALE)

LA BAMBINA
(THE GIRL)

LA REGIONE
(THE REGION)

This rule however has many exceptions:

MALE
FEMALE
Il dottore (the doctor)
La dottoressa (the female doctor)
L’imperatore (the emperor)
L’imperatrice (the empress)
Il leone (the lion)
La leonessa (the lioness)
Il poeta (The poet)
La poetessa (the poetess)
Il professore (the teacher)
La professoressa (the female teacher)
Il president (the president)
La presidentessa (the female president)
Lo student (the student)
La studentessa (the student- f.)
Lo scrittore (the writer)
La scrittrice (the female writer)
L’uomo (the man)
La donna (the woman)
